The man responsible for the deaths of five Mennonite children in a Washington car accident gave tearful testimony Wednesday while on trial for five counts of vehicular homicide, according to the Spokesman Review.
Investigators have suggested that the driver was suicidal before the Washington auto accident, was fumbling for his cell phone, and was driving erratically.
The car accident defendant said he had a bad cough the weekend before the accident and medical experts say the crash may have been caused by a “cough syncopy”, causing the driver to pass out and lose control of the vehicle on November 1, 2005. During his testimony, the driver said he had another coughing episode on November 18, 2005 that ended with him fainting and collapsing.
The driver remembers only moments before the Washington auto accident, stopping after he rolled down a window to cough and spit and setting his cruise control at 60 miles per hour.
